India: Odisha’s iron ore production falls 10% m-o-m in Jun’21

Odisha, India’s largest iron ore producing state, recorded output of 13.36 million tonnes (mn t) in Jun’21, down by 10%, as against 14.85 mn t in May’21, according to provisional data from the Odisha government maintained with SteelMint. The figures include fines, lumps and concentrate.

  • JSW Steel Ltd. was the leading producer of iron ore in the state, at 3.22 mn t, up by 13% on a monthly basis as against 2.85 mn t in May’21.
  • State-owned miner OMC recorded the second-highest iron ore production volumes at 1.52 mn t for Jun’21 as compared to 1.65 mn t in May’21. The leading merchant miner has plans to increase the capacity of the Guali iron ore mine to 30 mn t per annum from 5.7 mn t at present. Both the mines were allocated to OMC after months of non-operationalisation following the Odisha minerals auctions in 2020.
  • Production from Serajuddin Mines was recorded at 1.5 mn t, showing an increase of 11% m-o-m in Jun’21.
  • AM/NS India’s iron ore production was recorded at 0.42 mn t in Jun’21, down 14% m-o-m, as against 0.48 mn t in May’21. AM/NS India is projected to add another 2.08 mn t of iron ore from its 7.16 mn t/year Gorumahisani-Sagasahi block, which is slated to commence production from Aug’21, as per sources.
  • Tata Steel and SAIL recorded a drop in production for the month at 1.3 mn t and 1 mn t respectively. Higher production is expected to result from Tata Steel’s efforts in increasing the capacity of the Joda East iron ore mine from 12 mn t to 19.5 mn t. SAIL, on the other hand, is gearing up to double production from the Barsua-Kalta-Taldih mines to 16 mn t from about 8 mn t.
  • Output from Sarda Mines remained nil in June’21 after the company was accused of exceeding its permitted production limit once again. In May’21, the company’s iron ore production was recorded at 1.18 mn t.
