Glencore is set to buy the entire 66% stake in Colombia’s Cerrejon mine, held by BHP and Anglo American, by the first half of 2022 for $230 million. Though the mining major aims to become a net-zero emission company by 2050, owning the mine is unlikely to compromise its climate commitments, a statement by Glencore declared. Coal production from the mine stood at 12.4 mn t in 2020, down almost 52% y-o-y due to COVID-related production constraints and a workers’ strike at the mine extending for 91 days, as per reports.
