China: Ferrous futures in free fall as bear grip tightens on market

Iron ore futures on China’s Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) plunged 6% d-o-d as steel market sentiments turned bearish. Steel futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) too slumped by around 5% compared to 25 May’21. The closing prices of the most-traded iron ore and steel futures contracts on 26 May’21 are:

  • Iron ore futures Sep’21 contract on DCE closed at RMB 994.5/t ($156) (-RMB 63.5)
  • Iron ore futures June’21 contract on the Singapore Exchange (SGX) closed at $172.4/t (-$11.6)
  • SHFE rebar futures Oct’21 contract closed at RMB 4,667/t ($730) (-RMB 252)
  • SHFE HRC futures Oct’21 contract closed at RMB 5,017/t ($785) (-RMB 264)
