India: NMDC misses FY’21 iron ore production target despite recording 8% y-o-y increase

India’s largest iron ore producer – NMDC’s total iron ore production for FY’21 was recorded at 34.11 mn t, up 8% against 31.49 mn t in FY’20. However, the output stood lower than the previously estimated target of 35 mn t.

Chhattisgarh mines contributed 78% of total production at 26.56 mn t, up by 8% y-o-y.

Annual production at Bacheli Complex which stood at 12.9 mn t, and monthly production of 1.98 mn t in Mar’21 are the highest ever since inception. Similarly, production at Kirandul Complex at 13.6 mn t in FY’21 and monthly production of 1.9 mn t in Mar’21 are the highest ever since inception.

Output from Karnataka mines stood at 7.55 mn t, higher by 8% y-o-y. NMDC restarted iron ore operations at its Donimalai iron ore mine on 18 Feb’21 after obtaining a lease extension for 20 years w.e.f. 03 Nov’18 from Govt. of Karnataka and completing the associated statutory requirements. The mine has an EC limit of 7 mn t pa.

NMDC’s total iron ore sales for FY’21 stood at 33.27 mn t, as compared with 31.51 mn t in FY’20.

Speaking about the production and sales for FY’21, Shri Sumit Deb, CMD, NMDC said, “It has been a year of challenges for everyone. In spite of these situations, team NMDC has been able to excel on all fronts, including fight against COVID, enhanced production and sales and also taken care of its community. I congratulate all our employees and stakeholders and take pride in their resolute efforts towards achieving this goal. I am sure with this kind of zeal and enthusiasm; we will definitely surpass 42 mn t in FY’22. With new reforms in mining rules, NMDC would look for new opportunities for capacity enhancement.
