India: Rourkela Steel Plant registers best performance in April-May

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) a unit of SAIL has registered the best ever April-May performance in key areas including hot metal and crude steel production, said company sources. 

In the first two months of the current fiscal, RSP produced 3.94 lakh tones of Hot Metal, 3.69 lakh tones of Crude Steel and 3.46 lakh tones of Saleable Steel registering growth of 2.3 per cent, 2.1 per cent and 2.51 per cent respectively over the corresponding period last year. 

Production of plates witnessed an increase of 1 per cent while, galvanized sheets production was 22.96 per cent higher and Cold Rolled Natural Oriented (CRNO) steel production was 9.6 per cent more than the year 2012-13, RSP sources said. 

At 6.710 Giga Calorie per ton of crude steel, the Specific Energy consumption was also the best ever since inception. 

In the month of May 2013, the steel plant made 2.01 lakh tones of hot metal by utilizing 118.3 per cent of capacity, 1.9 lakh tones of crude steel by using 118.1 per cent of capacity and 1.85 lakh tones of saleable steel using 130.4 per cent of capacity, thereby clocking the best performance in the month (May). 

The new sinter unit-3, set up as a part of modernization and expansion, produced 79377 tons of sinter, while oven pushing from the new Coke Ovens Battery 6 during the trial run stood at an average of 43 pushing’s per day, added sources.
