India: OMC Hopeful to get Stage-II Forest Clearance for Daitari Mines by Month End

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) is hopeful of getting stage-II Forest Clearance for its Daitari Iron ore mines by 31 Mar, 2014. The mine was accorded with stage-I Forest Clearance in January.

“We are hopeful that our Datari Iron ore mines will get stage-II Forest Clearance by the end of this month i.e. 31Mar, 2014”, said Saswat Mishra, CMD of OMC.

With 50 MnT deposits of proven Iron ore reserve, the Daitari mines at Talipada village under Keonjhar & Jajpur districts is among OMC’s important Iron ore mines. In FY13, the Daitari mines produced only 703,440 MT Iron ore, which is less than its usual production of 2 MnT pa. After the grant of stage-I Forest Clearance, OMC is waiting for the stage-II or final Forest Clearance which would raise the output of mines to 3 MnT pa, as per the government controlled miner’s plans.

Upsurge in production at Daitari is crucial as many units such as Visa Steel, Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL), Aarti Steels & Bhushan Steel depends on it for Iron ore supplies.

“In 4-5 years, OMC plans to increase its Iron ore production to 21 MnT, out of this Daitari would contribute 6 MnT pa”, he said.
