Indian iron ore movement up 7% in Oct’20

Iron ore movement (excluding exports) across major producing states of the country was recorded at 9.77 mn t in Oct’20, up 7% m-o-m, as per SteelMint’s analysis. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, and Karnataka and import data as per customs. The figures exclude the captive iron ore movement of JSW, AMNS, SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.

State-wise iron ore movement analysis:

  • Odisha iron ore dispatches up 10% in Oct’20: India’s largest iron ore producing state recorded total merchant iron ore dispatches at 5.68 mn t in Oct’20, up 10% as against 5.17 mn t in Sep’20. The figures exclude movement for export and dispatches of miners- SAIL, JSW & Tata Steel.
  • Dispatches from Chhattisgarh picked up 21% in Oct’20: Iron ore dispatches from Chhattisgarh recorded at 1.58 mn t iron ore in Oct’20, up by 21% against 1.31 mn t in Sep’20.
  • Karnataka iron ore e-auction sales up marginally in Oct’20: Karnataka’s monthly iron ore e-auction sales volumes have picked up in the month of Oct’20. The total allotted quantity in Oct’20 was recorded at 2.3 mn t, up marginally when compared to 2.22 mn t in Sep’20. The iron ore e-auctions were suspended in Karnataka owing to some technical issues. However later auctions resumed from 14th Oct’20.
  • Indian pellet imports rise in Oct’20: Indian iron ore imports for the month picked up to 0.20 mn t in Oct’20 as against 0.14 mn t in Sep’20. The entire imports were of pellet by AM/NS from Bahrain. Monthly average global iron ore fines (Fe 62%) dropped to $120/t, CFR China in Oct’20 against that in last month at $124/t, CFR China.
  • Indian iron ore export volumes dropped in Oct’20: Indian iron ore export shipments fell to 3.61 mn t in Oct’20, down 10% m-o-m as compared to 4 mn t in Sep’20, according to vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint. The exports fell due to Chinese week long holidays (1st -7th Oct), and increase in Chinese port stocks.
    Rungta mines stood the largest iron ore exporter at 0.56 mn t (down 4% m-o-m). Thriveni was the second-largest exporter at 0.50 mn t (up 50% m-o-m), followed by SM Niryat at 0.47 mn t.
  • Indian pellet exports fell to two years low for the month: Indian pellet export shipments in the month of Oct’20 were recorded at 0.66 mn t, as per data maintained with SteelMint. The exports have dropped to over two years low as the level was last witnessed in Aug’18 at 0.45 mn t. Pellet exports fell amid higher realization in domestic market.
    BRPL stood the largest pellet exporter for the month at 0.28 mn t , up significantly against 0.04 mn t in Sep’20. Other major exporters were – JSPL at 0.11 mn t (down 57% m-o-m) and Godawari Power at 0.11 mn t.
