Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), CIL’s mining arm operating in Odisha, has recorded its highest ever dispatch by supplying 517,448 t coal on 28 Jul ’20.
The achievement was accompanied by highest ever rake movement noted for the day wherein 92 coal rakes were transported, of which 50 were from collieries located in Talcher coalfields and remaining 42 were from IB Valley Coalfields.
In addition, performance from few collieries which played a key role in the feat, have been enumerated below:
*Highest ever coal dispatched by Lakhanpur area in a single day- 120,265 t. Besides, the colliery also noted its movement of 22 rakes.
*Highest ever dispatch of 11 rakes from Hingula area.
* Highest ever dispatch of 100,796 t coal from Basundhara area.
Sign of revival
Subdued demand prevailing in the market due to COVID-19 has drastically affected MCL’s coal supplies in the first quarter of FY ’21. Total dispatch dropped 14% y-o-y to 32.73 mn t during Apr-Jun ’20 against 37.82 mn t noted in the year-ago period.
The stellar performance indicates an imminent sign of recovery for the subsidiary whose daily average dispatch had failed to cross 400,000 t in each of the previous three months.
Also, marking a positive development, the company stated that it had dispatched 21,106 t coal (through 16 rakes supplied via Merry Go Round) to the Odisha Power Generation Company on 28 Jul ’20, highlighting it a unique feat as the coal movement was carried out from single platform of lower capacity per rake.
As far as demand to the non-power sector is concerned, its recent spot auction had witnessed booking of 54% of the offered material, which is the best-ever return recorded since the beginning of current fiscal.
