In the first quarter (Q1) of CY’20, a total of 122 ships were demolished in India, Bangladesh & Pakistan, according to provisional data maintained with SteelMint stats.
The total quantity breached in the port of Alang (India), Chittagong (Bangladesh) & Gadani (Pakistan) was recorded at 640,411 LDT in Q1 CY’20, recording a fall of 22.71% Q-o-Q as against 828,627 LDT (102 ships) in Q4 CY’19. Also on yearly basis the same plunged by 12 ships to 122 ships in Q1 CY’20 compared to 134 ships in Q1 CY’19.
— Bangladesh, one of the largest ship recyclers who majorly grabs the top position of ship breaking scrap has seen fall in Q1 CY’20. The total number of ships demolished in the Chittagong port was marked at 311,594 LDT (49 ships), down by 34.30% Q-o-Q compared with 474,317 LDT with 51 number ships in Q4 CY’19. On a monthly basis, it declined by 70.7% to 131,030 LDT in Mar’20.
— Furthermore, Bangladesh’s bulk ferrous scrap imports witnessed a decrease by 29% in Mar’20. The country imported a total of 118,998 MT of scrap in Mar’20 as against 166,970 MT imported in Feb’20, as per vessel line up data maintained with SteelMint.
— In India, the total volume of ships demolished in the Alang port was marked at 294,299 LDT (60 ships), down by 8.07% Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’20 from 320,166 LDT with 43 number of ships in Q4 CY’19.
— In context to Pakistan, imports rose slightly to 34,518 LDT with 13 ships Q-o-Q in Q1 CY’20 as against 34,144 LDT, 8 ships in Q4 CY’19.
