India: CIL’s Coal Supply to Power Sector Down 2% Y-o-Y in Jul’19

Coal dispatch by CIL has decreased 2% Y-o-Y to 37.8 MnT in Jul’19 compared with 38.7 MnT in Jun’19, as per the data provided by coal ministry.

CIL has witnessed lower coal volume for off-take amid subdued coal output recorded at its various subsidiaries. Notably, the coal company has posted a negative growth in coal production during the ongoing fiscal FY20.

Besides, a healthier coal stock levels maintained at power plants comparable to the previous year, has also eased the need of immediate coal supplies.

CIL’s total coal off-take during the first 4 months of FY20 (Apr-Jul’19) was recorded at 200.1 MnT, down 0.8% Y-o-Y from 201.7 in Apr-Jul’18 period. Coal supplies to power sector accounted 78% of the total volume marked at 156.5 MnT, down 4% Y-o-Y from 162.2 MnT in Apr-Jul’18.

Supply Paralyzed at MCL’s Bharatpur OCP: CIL’s subsidiary operating in Odisha-MCL, experienced force majeure situation at its Bharatpur coal mining project following the landslide accident, which had forced the company to terminate coal supplies from the mine.

Consequently, MCL had withdrawn the supply of monthly scheduled quantity for the month of Aug’19, to be made against the bid quantities acquired under phase-I of exclusive & special forward e-auctions and the bid quantity under spot e-auction held on 26 Jul’19, from Bharatpur OCP.

In addition, it was also informed that supply of monthly scheduled quantity for Aug’19 to the linkage auction FSA customers having Bharatpur OCP as primary source, would be made from respective secondary sources.

Coal Supplies from SCCL:

Barring the lackluster performance from CIL, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) noted a remarkable rise in power plants’ coal supply during Jul’19.

SCCL’s coal dispatch to power plants rose 17% Y-o-Y to 4.3 MnT in Jul’19, although it had fallen to its lowest monthly total for FY20.

During the first 4 months of FY20 (Apr-Jul’19), SCCL’s total dispatch to power sector has reached 18.3 MnT, up 5% Y-o-Y from 17.5 MnT recorded in Apr-Jul’18 period.
