Vice president of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Manguirish Pai Raikar on Wednesday said that the chamber will explore its options to ensure that the Pig iron and Sponge iron plants in Goa that were affected by the Karnataka government’s decision not to permit ore-carrying trucks to Goa, keep their operations going.
Three factories have temporarily shut down due to the lack of supply of Iron ore from the neighboring state.
The government, particularly the Directorate of industries which is facilitator rather than a regulator, should play a pro-active role, Raikar said.
Raikar said that they would meet the chief secretary S K Srivastava on Thursday seeking the Government’s intervention in the matter. “We will request him to speak to his Karnataka counterpart to get the supply of Iron ore going,” he said.
He added that though Karnataka’s Iron ore is the raw material used in Goa and in return Pig iron goes back to Karnataka foundries for automobile components, etc.
