India: New Mangalore port hits coal handling record

Wednesday, November 10,

New Mangalore port handled 40,701 tonnes of coal in a day on November 4, surpassing the earlier record of 30,271 tonnes handled on January 16

A press release by Mr S. Gopalakrishna, Traffic Manager of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said on Tuesday that M.V. Ribbon, a gearless vessel carrying 69,891 tonnes of coal, called at the port on November 2.

The consignee of the cargo, Udupi Power Corporation Ltd, imported it from Indonesia for its thermal plant.

Coal traffic

The release said that the coal traffic at NMPT has steadily grown over the past six years. The port, which handled 3.15 lakh tonnes of coal during 2004-05, handled 27.90 lakh tonnes during 2009-10.

Till October, the port handled 16.04 lakh tonnes of coal as against 12.15 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Better infrastructure

Quoting Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release attributed the growth in coal traffic to the infrastructure created at the port such as deep-draught berth, deployment of three harbour mobile cranes, and construction of new railway lines. The extension of railway line inside the port has contributed a lot to the faster evacuation of bulk cargo such as coal, he added.
