Coal India Ltd (CIL) continued the downfall in monthly coal output, as production in Aug’18 fell to its new lows for FY19.
Coal production decreased 4% M-o-M to 38.8 MnT in Aug’18 against 40.56 MnT in Jul’18. Monthly coal production is on a 3-month declining streak, since witnessing an uptrend in May’18.
CIL’s coal output is hindered by the seasonal rains during the monsoons; however, the output is likely to improve from the month of September.
Despite the monthly fall, the coal miner has reported steady growth in output on the year-on-year basis. Production in Aug’18 was 3% higher on the year compared with 37.6 MnT in Aug’17. While, during the first 5 months of FY19 (Apr’18-Aug’18), total production has grew 12% to 216.23 MnT compared with 193.12 MnT in Apr’17-Aug’17.
CIL’s coal dispatch followed the footsteps of production, by reporting its lowest monthly total for FY19. Dispatch in Aug’18 fell 6% M-o-M to 45.22 MnT against 48.25 MnT in Jul’18, but was 3% higher on the year from 43.7 MnT in Aug’17.
The coal company has again dispatched more coal than its monthly output, to offload the excess coal stock in hand at its mines. During Aug’18, CIL’s coal dispatch was 17% higher than the production attained in the month.
Total coal dispatch during the first 5 months of FY19 has reached 246.9 MnT, up 10% Y-o-Y from 225.43 MnT recorded in the same period last year.
Subsidiary-wise Coal Production in Aug’18:
SECL remained the largest coal producer followed by MCL. SECL’s production stood 10.72 MnT in Aug’18, down 9% M-o-M from 11.73 MnT in Jul’18, MCL’s output was 9.19 MnT during the month.
Among the 7 coal producing subsidiaries of CIL (excluding NECL), only CCL and WCL had recorded a growth in monthly coal production in Aug’18, both having seen their output falling to its lowest mark in Jul’18.
In terms of coal dispatch, all the subsidiaries had recorded decline in supplies on the monthly basis, but each of them had dispatched more coal than its corresponding production during Aug’18.
