FY18 turned out to be an optimistic year for Indian pellet industry. According to data compiled by SteelMint, Indian pellet capacity utilization stood at 72%. Indian pellet capacity was learned to be around 83.32 MnT p.a. and as per our study, Indian pellet production stood around 59.6 MnT.
Major pellet makers recorded an increase in production in FY’18-:
Odisha based pellet maker-: JSPL (Jindal steel and power) has increase pellet production by 6% to 6.86MnT in FY’18 against 6.45MnT in FY’17. The company had also exported 1.92MnT pellets and accounting 21% share in total pellet exports from India.
Southern India based pellet maker-: KIOCL has recorded a robust improvement in pellet production to 2.33MnT in FY’18 increase 59% against the last year which was 1.46MnT. The company has witnessed a sharp increase of 73% to 1.59MnT pellet export during the FY’18 against 0.92 MnT in FY’17.
Central India based major pellet maker-: Godawari power and Ispat observed 1.84 MnT pellet production, an increase of 23% Y-o-Y in FY’18 against 1.5MnT in FY’17.
According to the SteelMint assessment top pellet producers like JSW Steel, Essar, Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Power and KIOCL accounted for nearly 63% share in India’s pellet production in FY’18 and were operating at 83% capacity utilization levels.
Indian pellet exports moved up by 8% to 8.96MnT in FY’18 on increased Chinese demand and also strong demand from non-Chinese markets like Japan, South Korea, Vietnam etc. Conducive domestic and global market stimulated Indian pellet makers to raise production.
