India: Coal Traffic Handled at Major Ports Rises 15% Y-o-Y in Q1 FY18

According to the data provided by Indian Ports Association, coal import at the country’s 12 major ports has increased 15% Y-o-Y during the first quarter of FY18.

Coal imports at the major ports have reached 41.321 MnT during Apr’18-Jun’18 against 35.904 MnT in Apr’17-Jun’17.

The 12 major ports of India listed under IPA include: Kolkata (Kolkata and Haldia dock both combined), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamajar (Ennore), Chennai, V O Chidambaranar, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, J.N.P.T and Kandla.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
As a result of the robust demand from power sector, imports of thermal and steam coal was marked 19% higher on the year at 28.287 MnT in the first quarter of FY19. Paradip port received the highest coal import during the period followed by Ennore, Kandla and V O Chidambaranar port.

Amongst the 12 port, thermal coal import at Mormugao port had witnessed the only decline on the yearly basis during the quarterly period. No imports were recorded at JNPT and Chennai ports.

Coking and other grades coal import had increased 7% Y-o-Y to 13.034 MnT in Apr’18-Jun’18. Major Coking coal handling ports during the period were-Kolkata, Paradip, Vishakapatnam and Mormugao.
