India: Transportation Cost to Increase Following Iron Ore Freight Hike in Odisha’s Joda Sector

As per the sources reported to the SteelMint, iron ore road freight is to increase in Joda sector located in Odisha- India’s largest iron ore producing state. Road freight is expected to increase by about INR 3-3.5/MT per km w.e.f 17th June 2018.

In mid of May’18, Truckers Association in Joda sector had halted iron ore movement demanding hike in transportation rate. Few major merchant mines located in Odisha’s Joda mining sector includes Rungta Jajang mines, Serajuddin, Indrani Patnaik, KJS Ahluwalia, K.N Ram, and R.P. Sao. These are the major mines from Odisha contributing major share of Odisha’s iron ore production.

Odisha Iron Ore Production up Marginally in FY’18

Odisha iron ore production in FY’18 increased by 3% at 96.76 MnT as against 94.17 MnT in FY’17. Rungta Mines continued to be the largest producer at 25.25 MnT iron ore in FY’18, up 10% against 22.87 MnT in FY’17. Other major miners included Serajuddin at 9.03 MnT (down 17% Y-o-Y) and KJS Ahluwalia at 5.4 MnT (down 4% Y-o-Y).
