South Africa- the largest exporter of ferro alloys and ores witnessed a marginal fall in its exports in Feb’18 against that of in Dec’17. As per recent customs data, South Africa exported 2.85 MnT ferro alloy and ores in Feb’18 against 3.06 MnT ferro alloy and ores exports in Jan’18.
The fall in export volume could possibly be due to political instability in the region, which led to minor logistical issues and thereby causing export volumes to take a slight hit.
On yearly premises, ferro alloy and ores exports from South Africa witnessed a substantial increase of 34% Y-o-Y in Feb’18 against 2.13 MnT ferro alloy and ore exports in Feb’17.
Exported ferro alloys and ores from South Africa majorly consisted of Manganese Ore followed by Chrome Ore, Ferro Chrome, and Silicon Manganese.
South Africa exported 1.35 MnT Manganese Ore in Feb’18 witnessing a decrease of 8% M-o-M against 1.46 MnT in Jan’18. Similarly, Chrome Ore and Ferro Chrome exports by South Africa registered a decrease of 2% and 16% M-o-M in Feb’18. While Silico Manganese exports by South Africa was 0.01 MnT in Feb’18 recording a fall of 50% M-o-M against 0.02 MnT in Jan’18.

China remained the largest importer of South African ferro alloy and ores at 1.50 MnT witnessing a fall of 3% M-o-M against 1.55 MnT in Jan’18. Mozambique, India, Japan, and South Korea were the other prominent importers of South African ferro alloys and ores.
