>>The newly formed Meghalaya Government will form a Group of Ministers (GoM) to find solutions to the ban on coal mining imposed by the National Green Tribunal in the state. The government has asked the State Co-ordination Committee of Coal Owners and Mine Dealers Forum to study the status of the NGT ban and suggest ways forward. Besides, the government also has made it clear that all aspects of environmental concerns will be taken into consideration while taking the matter forward.
>>Diversified conglomerate—Adani Enterprises Limited—has signed a coal mining agreement with NLC India Limited for developing and operating the Talabira I and III coal blocks, situated in Sambalpur and Jharsuguda in Odisha. The coal blocks cumulatively bear a minable reserve of around 554 MnT.
The coal blocks were allocated to NLC India Limited by the Coal Ministry for using the coal for its captive power plants.
>>Despite tall claims by the government of its various initiatives of increasing coal supply to the customers, the situation is actually showing the reverse.
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company Limited is facing the heat of rising power demand in Chennai and dwindling coal stocks. The stocks are expected to last only upto 10Apr’18 and if no steps are taken for supplying coal, its power generation will come to a halt. The company will require atleast 72,000 MT of coal per day to meet the rising power demand.
