India: Coal Supply to Power Plants Increase 7% Y-o-Y in Apr’17-Feb’18

Coal India Ltd (CIL) and Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) have together recorded coal supplies of 457.36 MnT to the Indian thermal power plants during Apr’17-Feb’18, as per the data provided by PIB. Total coal supplies to the power plants have rose 7% Y-o-Y from 426.13 MnT in the corresponding period of 2016-17.

In order to meet the coal requirement of power plants, CIL and SCCL had offered coal to be lifted through road mode from pit head stocks to power plants, which were located within 50-60 km from the nearest coal mine.

However, total coal dispatch to power plant has made a slower- than expected growth from Jan’18, as only 41.02 MnT coal was dispatched to the thermal power plants from CIL and SCCL in Feb’18.

As per the data provided by Ministry of Coal, CIL and SCCL had together dispatched 416.34 MnT coal to the power sector during Apr’17-Jan’18, out of which CIL’s share was 372.6 MnT, while the remaining 43.74 MnT coal dispatch was accounted by SCCL.

During Feb’18, both CIL and SCCL had witnessed fall in overall coal dispatch. CIL’s overall coal dispatch was down 7% M-o-M to 49.97 MnT; while SCCL’s coal dispatch had fell to a 4-month’s low of 5.42 MnT in Feb’18, which was also down 5% Y-o-Y compared with 5.70 MnT in Feb’17.

Coal stock at Indian power plants was recorded 15.325 MnT as on 06 Mar’18, sufficient for 10 days of power generation with 25 plants facing critical coal stock of less than 7 days. Back in the year-ago date, the available coal stock was 25.08 MnT, sufficient for 19 days of power generation, and only 1 plant was facing critical coal stock of less than 7 days.

Coal Supply to the Non-Power Sector:
CIL and SCCL have supplied 123.87 MnT coal to the non-power sector during Apr’17- Feb’18, which was 6% higher on the year compared with 117.10 MT in the corresponding period of 2016-17.
