According to latest customs data, USA flat steel imports which includes (7208 HR coils/Plates,7209 CR coils, 7210, 7212 GP/GC and 7225 electrical sheets) has imported 0.78 MnT in Dec’17 in comparison to 0.91 MnT in Nov’17.Thus nation’s flat steel imports slumped by 14% on monthly basis.
Similarly on yearly premises country’s flat steel import volumes decline significantly by 19% in Dec’17 against 0.96 MnT in Dec’16.
In CY17 country’s flat steel imports was assessed at 11.81 MnT which has inched down marginally by 0.16% which was 11.84 MnT in corresponding time frame the preceding year.

Fall in nation’s import volumes ahead of Section 232 Investigation-Imports from China,Brazil,South Korea,Russia,Turkey and Japan are harming the prospectus of domestic steel mills. Thus President Donald Trump will take action in his administration’s Section 232 ( anti circumvention case ) investigation into foreign steel. The action is expected to be implemented in mid April 2018.
Thus in USA offers for imported steel are less owing to uncertainty prevailing among the buyers and suppliers since they are surrounded by the fear of anti circumvention case and stricter US content rules.
USA’s flat steel imports from South Korea fell significantly – Canada exported 3.22 MnT of flat steel in during the time period of CY17. It occupied the largest share of 27.27 % in CY17.
Other countries include South Korea which occupied share of 9.12 %(1.08 MnT), Mexico with 6.99% ( 0.83 MnT) followed by Turkey at 6.24% ( 0.74 MnT) and Taiwan at 5.87% share ( 0.69 MnT) respectively .
USA flat steel imports from South Korea fell from 2.11 MnT in CY16 to 1.08 MnT in CY17. Import volumes from Brazil, Vietnam and Netherlands moved down.
However on monthly basis in Dec’17 Canada exported 0.26 MnT of flat steel to USA in Dec’17 down by 10 % against 0.26 MnT in Nov’17.
Other flat steel exporting countries in the month of Dec’17 comprises of South Korea at 0.03 MnT ,Mexico 0.07 MnT , followed by Turkey 0.05 MnT and Taiwan at 0.04 MnT.
