CIL: Coal Production Up 7% M-o-M in Dec’17

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported an increase of 7% in monthly coal production during Dec’17. Coal production stood 54.63 MnT in Dec’17 against 51.29 MnT in Nov’17. Production was also slightly higher on the year compared with 54.20 MnT in Dec’16.

It is the fifth successive month that the company has recorded growth on the monthly basis, ever since the country witnessed coal shortage in the domestic market. Total coal production during Apr’17-Dec’17 has increased 2% Y-o-Y to 383.93 MnT, compared with 377.51 MnT during the same period in the previous year. The company, thereby missed its production target of 406.58 MnT set for the period by 6%.

The shortfall in coal production was primarily due to the accumulation of high coal stock as a result of lesser coal lifting by customers’ upto Jul’17, because of which CIL had limited its coal production during that period. Moreover, production was hampered during Jun’17-Sep’17 due to the excessive rain in coal mining areas, only after which the company had picked up the production process.

CIL’s coal offtake witnessed a remarkable performance during the month, as the company managed to dispatch 53.44 MnT coal out of the targeted value of 53.84 MnT in Dec’17. Coal offtake increased 5% M-o-M compared with 50.67 MnT in Nov’17 and was also 4% higher on the year compared with 51.46 MnT in Dec’16.

CIL had stepped up coal supplies to power plants to pull them out of criticality situation and is now aiming to increase coal supplies to Non-power sector with stabilization of coal supplies to power plants.

Total coal offtake stood 421.21 MnT during Apr’17-Dec’17, which was 8% higher compared with 391.53 MnT in Apr’16-Dec’16.

Subsidiary-wise Performance in Dec’17:
SECL had produced highest coal quantity of 14.41 MnT in Dec’17, followed by MCL which had produced 13.49 MnT coal. All the subsidiaries had recorded growth in coal production on the monthly basis, except CCL (Central Coalfields Ltd) whose production fell 7% M-o-M to 5.68 MnT.

In terms of Coal Offtake, SECL and MCL were the top 2 subsidiaries which had dispatched highest coal quantity. All the 8 subsidiaries of CIL had recorded growth on the monthly basis in Dec’17. However, only 4 of these have achieved their respective offtake target during the month, namely-NCL, WCL, SECL and NECL.
