Japan, the second largest iron ore importer of the world imported 10.24 MnT iron ore in Oct’17, down 2% M-o-M as against 10.44 MnT in Sep’17. The Y-o-Y imports also witnessed a marginal decline of 1% in Oct’17 as compared to Oct’16 which stood at 10.32 MnT.
During Jan-Oct’17, Japan imported 104.1 MnT iron ore, down by 4% against same period last year which stood at 108.97 MnT.
An agglomerated (pellets/concentrate) iron ore imports were up by 17% M-o-M to 1.81 MnT as against 1.55 MnT in Sep’17. It showed an increase of 39% Y-o-Y in Oct’17 as compared to Oct’16 which was 1.30 MnT.
The non-agglomerated (fines/lump) iron ore imports witnessed a decline of 5%, at 8.43 MnT in Oct’17 as compared to Sep’17 at 8.88 MnT. The Y-o-Y imports also depicted a decline in Oct’17 of 7% as compared to Oct’16 which was 9.02 MnT.

Australia continues to remain the largest iron ore exporter to Japan in the month of Oct’17 with quantity of 5.97 MnT up by 18% as compared to previous month, followed by Brazil at 1.85 MnT Canada-1.09 MnT and South Africa – 0.46 MnT.
