Bangladesh coal import has achieved the highest monthly total since Jul’15, the period from which CoalMint has started maintaining Vessel line-up data for Bangladesh bulk imports.
According to the data maintained, Coal Imports have rose 81% M-o-M to 531,260 MT in Nov’17, compared with 292,950 MT in Oct’17. On the yearly basis, Import was 46% higher than the coal quantity of 365,000 MT recorded during Nov’17.
Coal Imports in during Jan’17-May’17 was down 8% Y-o-Y to 981,870 MT, compared with 1,062,850 MT coal recorded during the same period in CY16. However, the necessity of coal restocking after the monsoon season had resulted in agressive buying among the brick manufacturers.
Overall Coal Imports during Jan’17-Nov’17 has now reached 1,961,610 MT, up 8% during the same period in CY16.
Major Coal Exporters:
Bangladesh has been sourcing its coal needs majorly from Indonesia and South Africa, with a few coal shipments coming from Australia, Mozambique and Malaysia.
During Nov’17, Bangladesh has procured all of its coal from Indonesia and South Africa only.
Total Coal Shipments from Indonesia were recorded 318,110 MT in Nov’17, up 152% M-o-M compared with 126,450 MT in Oct’17.
Coal Shipments from South Africa were recorded highest since Jul’15, as Bangladesh received 213,150 MT coal from the country. Monthly coal imports from Africa jumped nearly four-fold in Nov’17.

Quantity in MT
Recently, Bangladesh firm Petro-Bangla was heard to be interested in having coal stakes in South Africa, Australia and Indonesia. With the global coal market already being extremely tight, the move by Bangladesh will only add fuel to the rising coal prices.
