Taiwan : Coal Imports Down 7% M-o-M in Sep’17

According to the recent released data by Taiwan customs, the county’s coal import has fallen 7% M-o-M to 5.87 MnT in Sep’17 against 6.29 MnT in Aug’17. Import volume was however 16% higher on the year compared with 5.05 MnT in Sep’16.

Despite the monthly fall, Taiwan coal import has been increasing in CY17, and has crossed the 50 MnT mark in Sep’17. While back in CY16 the same feat was achieved in the month of October.

Total coal imports has rose 11% Y-o-Y to 53.89 MnT during Jan’17-Sep’17, compared with 48.47 MnT coal imported during the Jan’16-Sep’16 period.

Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Bituminous coal imports fell 9% M-o-M to 5.55 MnT in Sep’17 against 6.08 MnT in Aug’17. So far, the country has imported 51.82 MnT Bituminous coal in CY17 (till Sep’17), which accounts for 96% of the total import quantity.

Met coke, Anthracite and Pet coke were the other major coal grades imported during the month.

Quantity in MnT

Major Coal Exporters:

Australia, Indonesia and Russia are the three major coal exporter, catering more than 85% of the total coal requirement of Taiwan every month.

Coal export from both Australia and Indonesia was down on the month, while export from Russia had increased 26% M-o-M to 0.63 MnT in Sep’17.

South African coal export to Taiwan doubled during the month to 0.33 MnT in Sep’17, which was also higher on the yearly basis.

Colombia, Canada and China were the other major coal exporters during the month.
