Turkey’s coal import has fallen 9% M-o-M to 3.87 MnT in Sep’17, according to the data provided by customs. The country had reported year- high import of 4.26 MnT coal in Aug’17.
On the yearly basis, Coal imports in Sep’17 gained 18% growth compared with the imports of 3.27 MnT in Sep’16.
Turkey’s Energy Minister has vowed to make full use of domestic coal to minimize coal imports in the recent protocol signing ceremony between Hattat Holding and Eren Holding.
The agreement between these two parties stipulates that the coal produced by Hattat Holding would be processed at Eren Holding’s Zetes power plant. Earlier, Zetes thermal power plant had been using 7 MnT of imported coal for power generation.
According to customs data, Turkey’s coal import has risen 5% Y-o-Y to 31.19 MnT during Jan’17-Sep’17 period, compared with 29.58 MnT in Jan’16-Sep’16. The country had imported 41.39 MnT coal in CY16.
The minister emphasized the need for effective utilization of domestic coal resource, as the country having about 18 BnT coal reserve, was still importing 40 MnT coal every year.
Turkey’s domestic coal production is expected to cross 80 MnT this year and the country is aiming to produce more than 100 MnT coal by the end of next year.
Grade-wise Coal Imports:
Non-coking coal import was down 19% M-o-M to 2.78 MnT in Sep’17. Non-coking coal had the major share in coal imports, accounting more than 70% every month.
Among the other coal grades, import of Coking coal, Met coke and Pet coke had increased during the month. While Anthracite coal imports had fell 8% on the month to 0.11 MnT in Sep’17.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Exporters:
Colombia had exported highest coal shipments to Turkey in CY17, accounting to 12.37 MnT coal out of the total quantity during Jan’17-Sep’17. However, Russia was the largest coal exporter in Sep’17.
Russian coal export stood 1.5 MnT in Sep’17 with a minor growth of 1% M-o-M. Exports were however significantly high on the yearly basis, increasing 81% compared with 0.83 MnT in Sep’16.
Colombian Coal exports fell 29% M-o-M to 1.26 MnT in Sep’17, which were also 17% lower on the year compared with 1.51 MnT in Sep’16.
United States was the third-largest coal exporter in Sep’17. The country had supplied 0.45 MnT coal to Turkey, with exports growing both on the monthly and yearly basis.
