Power Utilities have been advised to import 50 Million Tonnes (MnT) of imported coal for power plants designed for domestic coal in view of the shortfall in domestic production of coal during 2013-14.
The total coal estimated to be imported in 2013-14 is 82 MnT for 36 power plants. This includes 50 MnT for 27 power plants designed on domestic coal and 32 MnT for nine power plants designed on imported coal. This is being done to meet the domestic shortfall in production of coal.
Availability of domestic coal assured from Coal India Limited (CIL), Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Captive Mines was only 441 MnT, whereas the total domestic coal requirement for the year 2013-14 stands at 516 MnT.
The total expenditure on import of coal for the year 2013-14 is expected to be around 6,560 Million USD.
