SteelMint Group is hosting the 3rd Steel Scrap and Raw Materials Conference: Asia, in Bangkok, Thailand. This two-day conference spanning from 11th-12th Sept’17 is being attended by scrap and semi-finished steel buyers, suppliers and steel mills owners from various countries like Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia & India which are emerging markets for steel scrap and other raw materials.

In the first technical session organized today had eminent speakers talking about new technologies for efficient steel making. Mr. Gerald Wimmer, Vice President Primetals, Austria talked on  ‘Jet process’ which directly uses chemical energy of coal to melt solid additions like scrap, HBI. Apart from being very efficient it also reduces carbon emissions.

The 2nd session focussed on ” whether South East Asian nations remain import dependent or increase steel production.”

The key highlights were:

1. Vietnam steel billet production is to increase to 10 MnT in CY17 against 7.8 MnT in the previous year which is expected to grow to 18 MnT in CY20.

2.With decreasing power cost and upcoming steel capacities, Indian Manganese alloy industry will be poised to become a global leader.

3.Graphite electrode shortage has resulted in global price hike and prices are unlikely to come down in the near short term.
