15 Coal Mines in Shanxi of China to Face Closure This Year

The Chinese Government has finalized closure of 15 coal mines in the Shanxi region as part of its plan to cut coal overcapacity and shift towards cleaner energy sources from fossil fuels.

The planned shut-down of the mines, across seven cities in the region, will lower production capacity by 10.6 MnT. Six of the mines planned for closure have already ceased operations earlier this year. The region is among the biggest coal producing provinces in that country.

The government is in the process of cutting down coal over-supply in order to rationalize demand and supply, and to lay stress on usage of cleaner fuels. During this year, 1,000 coal mines in that country with a combined capacity of 60 MnT will be closed down.
