India tops the buyer list of scrapped ships in the world in the first 10 month’s of 2017, followed by Bangladesh, the data received from GMS showed.
In this period, 213 scrapped ships were bought by India and 147 by Bangladesh, making South Asia the most favourable destination for recycling old ships.
A total of 776 ships were breached during Jan to Oct 2017. Prior to this the total ships recycled are 936 in CY16, 766 in CY15 & 970 in CY14.
Out of total scrapped shipped in 2017 (Jan-Oct), about 173 bulk vessels were scrapped which is majorly in China (75) and the 2nd major breaker was Pakistan reported about 49 bulk vessels. Further, 172 Tanker & containers was breached by India (66) & Bangladesh (61).
India has increased ship recycling activities since 2016, when Indian government put safe guard and anti dumping duty on prime plates from different countries. Notably ship breaking plates are used in re-rolling and at times can be substituted with prime plates.
India is the most favourable destination to send ships from all over the world with for recycling. India have recycled over 7,000 ships since 33 years. Alang is the center for India’s ship recycling around 213 number of ships were scrapped in 2017. While, in 2016 it stood at 319 ships & earlier in 2015 the number of ships were 217.
