Secondary steel makers in Punjab have asked the Steel
Ministry to roll back its “controversial” quality control order which makes it
compulsory to produce only Bureau of Indian Standards certified items from
December 24.
According to the Quality Control Order of the Steel
Ministry, manufacturing of steel including bars, rods will only be allowed
after obtaining a license from BIS. This order will be applicable for secondary
steel makers from December 24, said industry representatives.
“We have asked the Ministry of Steel to withdraw this
quality control order (taking license from BIS for making steel products)
otherwise it will lead to closure of small units, large scale unemployment and
hike in steel rates,” the Confederation of Indian Steel Producers Association
(CISPA), Chairman, Mr Vinod Vashisht, said today.
“As secondary steel producers contribute 70 per cent of
steel items like bars, the implementation of quality control order will hinder
the supply of steel items for use in infrastructure development,” he asserted
while adding, “if the order is implemented, it will only breed corruption,
harassment and licence raj.”
