In an opposing trend, some state-run power companies are in the process of importing coal, especially at a time when talks of surplus domestic coal availability due to higher domestic production and better supply infrastructure, are doing the rounds.
Power generators in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal are among the ones readying for procuring coal from overseas markets. Recently, the Andhra Pradesh government has allowed the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Company Limited to import 1 MnT of coal; and the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited has sought the state government’s permission to import a same quantity of coal.
These companies had stopped imports after the assurance of the central government of adequacy in supply. However, the recent inconsistency in the domestic supply has forced these companies to look out for foreign markets for sourcing coal in order to maintain their power generating schedule.
