Pakistan steel mills have returned to bulk scrap imports, SteelMint learned from market sources. Pakistan is conventionally a containerized market but steel mills have shown interest in bulk cargoes owing to rising demand and price difference between containerized and bulk scrap. Mughal Steel is the single largest importer of bulk scrap. Other mills jointly bring bulk vessels and distribute among themselves. Country has imported about 9 bulk scrap vessels since June 2017, according to data maintained by SteelMint.
According to sources, Pakistan based mill has booked one bulk cargo from US early this week at an average price of USD 328/MT CFR Pakistan main port. Cargo consisted of 24,000 MT Shredded scrap and 6,000 MT of HMS 80:20. Cargo was sold through Sanjay Trade Corporation, an India based scrap trader, according to sources.
Pakistan remains the sweet spot for scrap importers owing to rising appetite for steel raw materials. Pakistan is emerging as one of the top importers of scrap and if it grows at this pace, it may become third or fourth largest importer of scrap in years to come. There is no official data on scrap imports to Pakistan, but according to industry estimates, country imports about 4-5 MnT every year, which may increase to 5-6 MnT next year.
Pakistan has an installed steel making capacity of 6 MnT, which is likely to increase to 7-7.5 MnT next year.
