South Africa: RBCT’s Non-Coking Coal Exports Up 3% M-o-M in Sep’17

South Africa’s premium coal export terminal, Richards Bay has recorded 3% increase in monthly exports during Sep’17. Export volume was 6.70 MnT in Sep’17 against 6.51 MnT in Aug’17, as per the vessel line-up data compiled by CoalMint Research.

Monthly coal export to its chief consumer India was recorded highest for the year in Sep’17, as Indian buyers have increased their purchasing post-monsoon. Total Non-coking Coal Export from RBCT has reached 57.07 MnT during the first 9 months (Jan’17-Sep’17).

Major Non-Coking Coal Importers:
India received the highest monthly Non-coking coal shipments of 3.56 MnT in Sep’17, up 28% M-o-M from 2.77 MnT in Aug’17. India’s share of coal accounts for more than 40% of the total RBCT’s exports in CY17 (till Sep’17).

Indian coal import was expected to increase post monsoon, but were also supported by CIL’s decision to regulate coal supply to Non-power sector in the period of low coal production. Indian buyers then had to turn for imported coal to meet their demands.

South Korea overtook Pakistan to become the second-largest coal importer during the month. Imports from Korea increased 199% M-o-M to 0.44 MnT in Sep’17. While Pakistan coal import fell 62% on the month to 0.34 MnT.

Netherlands, Spain, Israel, Gibraltar and UAE were the other major coal importers from Richards Bay Port.
