Canadian coal export has increased 14% M-o-M to 3.09 MnT in Aug’17, according to the customs data. The country had exported 2.72 MnT coal in Jul’17. Exports in Aug’17 were also 3% higher on the year compared with 3 MnT in Aug’16.
The total export has remained almost unchanged during the year, as the country has registered 22.85 MnT coal export during Jan’17-Aug’17against the exports of 22.26 MnT coal in the corresponding period of previous year.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Canada had exported only two coal grades namely-Bituminous Coal and Pet Coke in Aug’17, export of both of which had increased during the month.
While Exports of Bituminous coal increased 6% M-o-M to 2.62 MnT, Pet coke export rose 96% on the month to 0.47 MnT.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
South Korea and Japan replaced China and India to become the top two coal importers during the month.
South Korean coal imports rose 182% M-o-M to 0.93 MnT in Aug’17, which were also 82% high on the year compared with 0.51 MnT in Aug’16.
Japanese coal import jumped almost 4 times on the month to 0.84 MnT in Aug’17, also recording a minor growth on the year compared with 0.83 MnT in Aug’16.
China was the third-largest coal importer in the month, recorded drop of 39% M-o-M in monthly imports. However, imports rose 75% Y-o-Y to 0.42 MnT in Aug’17 compared with 0.24 MnT in Aug’16.
India dropped to sixth among the major coal importers, as the country witnessed a drop of 71% M-o-M in imports to 0.15 MnT in Aug’17. USA, Taiwan, Brazil and Ukraine were among the other major coal importers during the month.
