Indian Pellet Exports Jump 47% in Q2 FY18 On Strong Chinese Demand

According to the data maintained with SteelMint, India exported 2.41 MnT pellets in Q2’FY’18 against 1.64 MnT in Q1 FY’18. Thus it’s recording a growth of around 47% Q-o-Q. The demand for higher iron ore (pellets and lump) is on the rise in China as a result of pollution control measures. Few other factors that have boosted Indian pellet exports are – absence of supplies from Brazilian Samarco and high pellet premium. In Q2 Indian pellet export to China were more than double with 1.91 MnT compared to Q1 which was 0.99 MnT.

In H1 FY18, Indian pellet exports have grown 41% Y-o-Y with 4.05 MnT pellets against 2.88 MnT exports for the same period last fiscal. JSPL has remained the largest pellet exporter from India in H1 FY18 followed by BRPL and KIOCL. Out of total pellets exported from India in 1st half of FY18, China accounted for a share of 72%.

However, Indian pellet exports went down 12% M-o-M to 0.82 MnT of Sept’17 compared to 0.93 MnT in Aug’17. There was marginal increase by 2% Y-o-Y as well for the month of Sept’17 compared to the pellet exported in Sep’16 which was at 0.8 MnT then.

Shipper wise Iron Pellet Exports from India in Sept’17-
KIOCL remained the largest exporter for Sep’17. It has exported 0.22 MnT in Sept’17. Other major exporters were Rashmi Metaliks (0.16 MnT), JSPL (0.15 MnT) and Arya Iron & Steel at 0.11 MnT.

Pellet Exports from Dhamra port increased nearly thrice in Sept’17 –
Pellet exports from Dharma Port were highest at 0.27 MnT and increased significantly M-o-M compared to last month Aug’17 which was 0.10 MnT . Other major ports for Indian pellet exports in Sept’17 were – Paradip (0.22 MnT), Mangalore (0.22 MnT), Haldia (0.05 MnT), Gangavram 0.05 (MnT).

All Indian pellet export shipments in Sept’17 were directed to China – China seems to be the only destination for the Iron Pellet makers for the month of Sept’17. It has recorded 24% increase M-o-M with 0.82 MnT Sept.’17 compared to last month Aug’17 which was 0.66 then.
