Turkish billet imports noticed a sharp fall in first six months (Jan-Jun) of 2017 against same period last year. According to the data maintained by SteelMint, Turkey imported around 2.1 million tonnes of billets in H1 2017 versus 3.6 million tonnes in H1 2016. The fall in imports is primarily attributed to falling availability of Chinese billet in the seaborne market. China’s imports to Turkey in H1 2016 stood at 0.7 million tonnes (20%), which fell to nil in H1 2017.
Notably, Chinese steel exports have dropped over increased domestic consumption and cutting down of steel production by Chinese government in order to curb pollution.
