Coal export by Russia has crossed the 100 MnT mark in CY17, despite recording decline on the monthly basis.
Russian coal export in Jul’17 has almost reduced to half of its value from the previous month, as per the latest customs data. The total export in Jul’17 was recorded at 10.52 MnT against 20.99 MnT in Jun’17.
However, on the yearly basis, exports were 11% higher in comparison with 9.52 MnT coal exported during Jul’17.
Despite the drastic fall in the monthly exports, total coal export by Russia in CY17 crossed the 100 MnT. During the Jan’17-Jul’17 period, coal exports has increased 10% Y-o-Y to 100.9 MnT, compared with 91.39 MnT coal exported during Jan’16-Jul’16 period.
Russia’s growing coal industry is vowing to produce just under 400 MnT coal this year. With over half of the coal produced to be consumed for domestic purpose, the country is likely to maintain its status as one of the world’s largest coal exporter, as it expects exports of over 150 MnT thermal coal and about 23 MnT Coking coal in CY17.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Exports of Non-coking coal fell 48% M-o-M to 8.28 MnT in Jul’17, also Coking coal exports were down 62% M-o-M to 0.88 MnT during the month.
While exports of all other major coal grades declined in Jul’17; export of Met Coke managed to record a growth of 47% M-o-M to 0.25 MnT in the month.

Quantity in MnT
Major Coal Importers:
China overtook South Korea to become the top coal importer from Russia in Jul’17. Chinese coal import was recorded at 1.18 MnT in Jul’17, down 46% M-o-M , but were 42% higher on the year compared with 0.83 MnT in Jul’16.
South Korean coal import was 1.05 MnT in Jul’17, dropping both on the monthly and yearly basis.
Germany was the third largest coal receiver with the imports of 0.96 MnT in Jul’17, imports during the month increased 60% Y-o-Y compared with 0.6 MnT in Jul’16.

Russian Coal Imports:
According to the Russian customs data, about 1.81 MnT coal was imported into the country in Jul’17. Russian coal imports increased 9% M-o-M and 33% Y-o-Y in comparison with the imports of 1.66 MnT in Jun’17 and 1.36 MnT in Jul’16 respectively.
So far, Russia has imported 12.1 MnT coal in CY17 (till Jul’17), Kazakhstan being the prime source of coal had supplied 10.65 MnT coal, whose monthly exports increased 8% M-o-M to 1.44 MnT in Jul’17.
