Indian power plant coal imports have fell 5% M-o-M to 3.917 MnT in Aug’17, which was also the lowest monthly total in FY18. The power utilities had imported 4.103 MnT in Jul’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
Indian utilities total coal import has reached 23.207 MnT in FY17 (till Aug’17).
Plant-wise Break-up of Coal Imports:
Out of the total coal imported during the month, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 0.968 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 2.949 MnT.
Plants Designed on Domestic Coal:
Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants has fallen 35% M-o-M to 0.968 MnT in Aug’17 compared with 1.487 MnT in Jul’17.
No coal was imported by the State-owned Power Utilities during the month. Whereas Central sector plants which had not imported coal in the previous month, had acquired 0.021 MnT coal in Aug’17 with NTPC being the single coal receiver.
Coal imported by Private sector power plants has decreased by 36% M-o-M to 0.947 MnT in Aug’17 in comparison with 1.476 MnT in Jul’17.
Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal import from plants based on imported coal increased 13% M-o-M to 2.949 MnT in Aug’17, as a result of the robust demand for power generation in the country and restocking requirement after the monsoon period.
In State sector, imports from Sikka Power Station zoomed five times to 0.06 MnT in Aug’17, where as private sector plants also witnessed growth of 11% in coal imports to 2.889 MnT in Aug’17.
Adani Power (Mundra), Coastal Gujarat, Semb Corp Gayathri power and Adani Power (Kawai) were the major coal receiving plants during the month.
Coal Stock at Power Plants:
India’s power plant utilities recorded the lowest closing stock for FY17 in Aug’17. The closing stock level was 16.169 MnT, against the opening stock of 22.312 MnT at the beginning of the month.
Coal Receipt by plants fell 4.12% M-o-M to 44.279 MnT, because of the lower coal offtake by CIL. While the increase in power generation, caused rise in coal consumption by 9.05% M-o-M to 50.737 MnT in Aug’17.
