Japanese firm – Mitsui has won the tender floated to supply around 10,000 MT Head Hardened Rails (HH Rails) for Ahmedabad metro rail project. It is for Phase – 1 for track work of 37 km long of the Ahmedabad metro rail project.
As per sources, other companies that participated in the tender were – Jindal Steel, British Steel, East Metals and Voestalpine.
According to market sources report to SteelMint, the imported grade of HH 1080 has higher durability than normal rail of grade HH 880. And as per market sources, only JSPL in India produces grade HH 1080. But owing to some terms & conditions, the company could not qualify, sources mentioned.
Since the grade required is not much available with Indian steel mills, therefore despite Policy for Providing Preference to domestically manufactured iron & steel products (DMI&SP), it has to be imported from foreign companies.
As per sources, Mitsui has been awarded with supply of railway tracks to Delhi Metro Rail project in previous years.
Mitsui & Co aims at becoming a leader in global steel distribution industry. Its Iron & Steel Products Business Unit provides customers across wide-ranging industries both in Japan and overseas with services relating to the procurement and supply of iron and steel products. Apart from this, it also specializes in Mineral & Metal Resources, Machinery & Infrastructure, Energy etc.
