Indian coal production has been on the rise since the past years. In order to curb coal imports into the country, Government has instructed CIL to enhance its coal supplies.
Accordingly, the total coal production during the first half of CY17 has increased 2% Y-o-Y to 351.7 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17 period. The country had produced 344.4 MnT coal during the Jan’16-Jun’16 period, as per the data released on PIB‘s website.
During the first quarter of CY17 (Jan’17-Mar’17), total coal production had increased 7% Y-o-Y to 206.2 MnT in comparison with 192.4 MnT coal produced during the first quarter of 2016 (Jan’16-Mar’16).
While low demand from power sector coupled with high coal inventory at mines has forced CIL to limit its production during the second quarter period. The coal production has dipped 5% Y-o-Y to 145.5 MnT during Apr’17-Jun’17 compared with 153 MnT during Apr’16-Jun’16.
Coal output was down 6% Y-o-Y to 48.7 MnT during Jun’17, compared with 51.7 MnT in Jun’16. Also, on the monthly basis, coal production in Jun’17 has decreased 4% compared with 50.5 MnT in May’17.
Share of coal in total mineral production in Jun’17:
The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during Jun’17 was INR 19363 crore. The contribution of Coal was the highest at INR 6743 crore (35%)
Lignite Production during Jun’17:
Lignite production has increased 37% M-o-M to 4.1 MnT in Jun’17 compared with 3 MnT in May’17. The contribution of Lignite in total value of mineral production was INR 733 crore during the month.
