India: Power Utilities’ Coal Import Down 19% M-o-M in Jul’17

Indian power plant coal imports have decreased by 19% M-o-M to 4.103 MnT in Jul’17 compared with 5.058 MnT in Jun’17, according to the data provided by Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

Out of the total coal imported during the month, power plants which run on domestic coal acquired 1.487 MnT coal for blending purpose, while plants based on imported coal acquired 2.616 MnT.

During the first 4 months of FY18 (Apr’17-Jul’17), Indian utilities have imported 19.29 MnT coal. Total coal imports during the previous fiscal FY17 had stood 66.055 MnT.

Coal imported for blending purpose by power plants has fallen 15% M-o-M to 1.487 MnT in Jul’17 compared with 1.759 MnT in Jun’17.

Central Power Utilities have not imported any coal during the month, while among the State utilities, only TANGEDCO has imported 0.011 MnT coal for its 4660 MW power plant in Tamil Nadu.

Coal imported by Private sector power plants has increased by 20% M-o-M, from 1.234 MnT in Jun’17 to 1.476 MnT in Jul’17.

Plants Designed on Imported Coal:
Coal import by plants based on imported coal has also fallen during the month. Imports have declined 20% on the month to 2.628 MnT in Jul’17.

Private sector plants imported 2.616 MnT coal in Jul’17. Out of the total 11 private plants based on imported coal, Simhapuri Energy and Meenakshi Energy did not import any coal while Ind Bharat’s Tuticorin Plant import data was not available for the month.

In State sector, Sikka Power Station, located in Gujarat, has acquired 0.012 MnT coal for its 500 MW (2X250 MW) unit in Jul’17, down by 91% M-o-M.

Major Coal Importers:
Adani Power acquired majority of coal during the month for its Mundra power plant. Coal imports were up by 22% M-o-M to 1.103 MnT in Jul’17.

Coastal Gujarat, Thermal PowerTech, Adani’s Kawai and Tirora power plants were among the other major coal importers during the month.

Coal Stock at Power Plants:
India’s power plant utilities recorded a coal stock of 22.051 MnT at the end of Jul’17 against an opening stock of 22.427 MnT during the beginning of the month.

The power utilities received 46.182 MnT coal from CIL/SCCL, Captive mining, E-auctions and coal imports in May’17 while consuming 46.525 MnT coal during the month.
