Mongolia has emerged as an alternate coal market to China, after China had imposed coal import ban on North Korea.
Coal has accounted 34-40% in North Korean exports, and almost all of it was shipped to China. However, in order to protest North Korea’s nuclear missile testing program, China had imposed ban on coal imports from North Korea from Feb’17 that will last until the end of the year.
Benefitted from the imposed Coal ban on North Korea, Mongolia’s Coal export volume has nearly doubled during the first half of CY17, in comparison with the exports during the first half of CY16.
According to the data provided by Customs, Mongolia’s coal export has increased 98% Y-o-Y to 18.96 MnT during Jan’17-Jun’17, compared with 9.58 MnT during Jan’16-Jun’16.
Moreover, Monthly export in Jun’17 was the highest during the 2016-17 period. Monthly export rose 15% M-o-M to 4.03 MnT in Jun’17, compared with 3.49 MnT in May’17. Exports in Jun’17 have also increased 68% Y-o-Y compared with 2.4 MnT in Jun’16.
Grade-wise Coal Exports:
Bituminous coal had accounted nearly 95% in Mongolian Coal exports during Jan’17-Jun’17 period. Export of Bituminous coal increased 95% Y-o-Y to 18.64 MnT in Jan’17-Jun’17.

Major Coal Importers:
China’s coal imports from Mongolia have surged by 95% Y-o-Y to 18.64 MnT during H1 CY17 compared with 9.56 MnT during H1 CY16. Moreover, China had acquired about 95% of the total Mongolian coal exports during Jan’17-Jun’17.
UK acquired the remaining coal quantity from Mongolia, the country’s coal imports have increased from 0.02 MnT in H1 CY16 to 0.32 MnT in H1 CY17.
