Pakistan has recorded a decline in monthly coal imports during Jul’17. The country’s import has fallen 34% over the month to 732,450 MT in Jul’17, compared with 1,103,070 MT in Jun’17.
Pakistan has so far imported 6,116,649 MT coal during CY17 (Jan’17-Jul’17), according to the vessel line-up data maintained by CoalMint Research.
Many infrastructure projects are schedule to be built as a part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), intended to strengthen the country’s economy.
In this regard, to boost coal requirement for power projects, Pakistan has commercially started its maiden coal terminal at Port Qasim.
Also, the first power project under CPEC, Sahiwal power project has become operational. The second unit (660 MW) of the 1320 MW (2X660MW) power project started commercial operation during Jul’17.
The power project is expected to reduce power deficit in the country by 25%.
Major Coal Exporters:
Pakistan coal imports are catered by supply from South Africa, Indonesia, Mozambique and Russia. However, no coal supplies were recorded from Indonesia and Russia during the month.
Coal Export from South Africa was recorded at 618,190 MT in Jul’17, down by 34% M-o-M. While exports from Russia increased 104% M-o-M to 114,260 MT in Jul’17.
