US President’s efforts to revive the American coal industry seem to be working. According to an analysis of the export data, coal exports from US have gone up more than 60% this year, driven mostly by the stronger demand from the European Union and Asia.
Coal exports from US during the Jan-May’17 period totaled 36.79 MnT, a rise of 60.3% over the exports of 22.94 MnT in the same period of 2016. However, the rise during the period of this year is below the volumes of exports during the corresponding period of the previous five years.
The overall exports to the European Union during the period of this year were at 16 MnT, up from 10.5 MnT in the corresponding period of the last year. At the same time, exports to Asia were higher at 12.3 MnT from 6.2 MnT in the year-ago period.
There was a 175% increase in shipments to the UK, and a doubling to France, which had suffered a series of nuclear plant outages, necessitating more reliance on coal.
