In a reply to the Lok Sabha, Piyush Goyal—the Minister of State for Coal & Power—has said that coal imports in India will fall further during 2017-18 due to the enhanced domestic production.
Referring to the coal import trend in the last few fiscals, the Minister said that coal imports in India had fallen from 217.78 MnT in FY15 to 203.95 MnT in FY16; and further to 190.95 MnT in FY17. Expressing confidence, he said that the imports will decline further in the current fiscal.
Detailing the imports during FY18, Goyal said that imports of coal in the country during Q1 FY18 had shrunk by 8.1% to 52.74 MnT from 57.38 MnT in Q1 FY17.
The Minister, however, explained that imports could not be totally eliminated as there is insufficiency of Coking Coal, and power plants designed to operate with imported coal will continue to import coal.
