Indian coal production has increased 9% over the month to 50.5 MnT in May’17, according to the data provided by Ministry of Mines. The country had produced 46.3 MnT coal in Apr’17.
Despite the growth on the monthly basis, production level in May’17 was 2% lower than coal production of 51.7 MnT achieved during May’16.
Last year, India became the second-largest coal producer in the world behind China with a total production of 650.74 MnT.
During the first 5 months of 2017, coal production has increased by 4% Y-o-Y from 292.7 MnT in Jan’16-May’16 to 303 MnT in Jan’17-May’17.

Share of Coal in Mineral Production:
Total value of Mineral production (excluding atomic and minor minerals) in India was INR 19944 crore during May’17. Out of which, contribution of coal was highest at INR 7171 crore (36%).
Lignite Production in May’17:
Lignite production during the month was recorded at 3 MnT in May’17, down by 6.3% Y-o-Y.
The net value of lignite production in May’17 was INR 470 crore.
