Total coal imported by thermal power plants in India has fallen 5% M-o-M in Jun’17, according to the Ministry of Coal report. Power plants have imported 5.058 MnT coal in Jun’17 against 5.331 MnT coal in May’17.
During the first quarter of FY18 (Apr’17-Jun’17), Indian power plants have imported 15.187 MnT coal
Out of the total amount, coal imported by plants based on domestic fuel (for blending purpose) has increased by 12% M-o-M in Jun’17, while import by plants which run on imported fuel has fallen 12% during the month.

Plants Based on Domestic Fuel:
Plants based on domestic fuel have imported 1.759 MnT coal in Jun’17, recording an increase of 12% M-o-M.
While imports from State and Central power plants have decreased during the month, imports by private based power plants has increased by 62% M-o-M to 1.234 MnT in Jun’17.
Semb Corp Gayathri Power had imported highest amount of 0.434 MnT coal for its 1320 MW plant in Andhra Pradesh.

Plant Based on Imported Fuel:
Plants based on imported fuel have witnessed fall in coal imports during the month. Coal imports have fallen 12% M-o-M to 3.299 MnT in Jun’17.
Imports from both state and private based power plants have decreased during the month.

Major Coal Importers:
Coastal Gujarat, a subsidiary of Tata Power, imported highest amount of 1.029 MnT coal for its Mundra Ultra Mega power plant.
Adani Power, Semb Corp Gayathri Power and JSW Energy were among the other major coal importers.
In State sector, Tamil Nadu’s Government power utility TANGEDCO acquired highest coal amount of 0.235 MnT during the month.

Coal Stock at Power Plants:
Opening coal stock at Indian power plants was recorded at 21945 MT at the beginning of Jun’17. The power utilities had received 47238 MT coal from various sources (CIL/SCCL, Captive mining, auctions and imports).
After consumption of 47161 MT coal in Jun’17, the closing coal stock at the power plants was recorded 22261 MT at the end of the month.
During the month, Coal consumption at power plants has fallen 11% M-o-M, compared with 53246 MT in May’17.
