Coal will remain as the dominant fuel for power generation in India—says a recently report, titled Energizing India, written jointly by the NITI Aayog and the Institute of Energy Economics of Japan.
According to the report, coal will continue to occupy around 46% share in the energy mix in India upto 2047. Coal, alongwith nuclear energy, will continue to operate as the base load units for power generation, as outlined in the report.
In the report, it is also detailed that the share of electricity generation through coal-based power plants will be approximately at around 55% by 2032. In FY17, coal-based power plants had generated more than 85% of the total electricity produced in the country.
To meet the targets of the Paris Agreement, 50% of the coal-based power generation capacity in the country by 2047 will have to be based on the supercritical technology, the report says.
As estimated in the report, the coal requirement in India in FY22 is calculated at 727 MnT, which also includes an import of 50 MnT.
