India: Iron Ore Movement Up 2% Q-o-Q in Q1-FY18

As per SteelMint’s analysis, iron ore movement across major steel making raw material producing states of the country was recorded at 32.64 MnT in Q1-FY18 which was at 31.85 MnT last quarter i.e. Q4-FY17. The figures are compiled on the basis of movements made via railways, trucks, Karnataka and Goa e-auction data and import data as per customs. The figures indicated do not include the captive iron ore movement of SAIL & Tata Steel and movement for exports.

Iron ore dispatches from Odisha Up Q-o-Q – Compared with the previous quarter Odisha iron ore dispatches increased by 17% Q-o-Q from 15.73 MnT in Q4-FY17 to 18.37 MnT in Q1-FY18. Among Odisha’s merchant iron ore miners – Rungta Mines dispatched highest quantity of ore followed by Serajuddin Mines and KJS Ahluwalia.

Rungta Mines’ iron ore dispatches increased 2% M-o-M to 1.80 MnT in Jun’17 compared to 1.75 MnT in May’17.

Chhattisgarh Iron Ore Movement Down 15% – India’s largest iron ore miner – NMDC in total supplied 269 rakes from its Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh last month against 317 rakes in May’17. Thus NMDC’s iron ore supply from Bailadila mines has gone down by 15% M-o-M in Jun’17. In the month of Jun’17, NMDC had kept iron ore prices unchanged.

Karnataka Iron Ore E-auction Sales at 2.41 MnT in Jun’17 – Iron ore sales via Karnataka e-auctions stood at 2.41 MnT in Jun’17 up 4% M-o-M. NMDC sold 1.09 MnT iron ore via e-auctions. JSW Steel remained the largest buyer at 1.77 MnT followed by BMM Ispat.

Indian Iron Ore Imports Fall in Jun’17 – India iron ore imports were down 86% M-o-M according to customs data maintained with SteelMint; there was a single iron ore importer last month. Iron ore imports to India have fallen from 390,920 MT in May’17 to merely a quantity of 55,200 MT in Jun’17. Only one buyer Goa Sponge has imported 55,200 MT iron ore in Jun’17.

Exports: Iron Ore Exports Down but Pellets Up from India in Jun’17 – Indian iron ore exports moved down and stood at 0.25 MnT in Jun’17, down 87% M-o-M. Major exporter for the month MMTC has exported the cargoes from Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, another shipper was from Odisha, Rungta Mines. However iron ore exports from Odisha have increased by 34% but have seen a decline of 45% from Andhra Pradesh.

Indian pellet exports have grown by 8% in Jun’17 with 0.60 MnT pellets against 0.55 MnT exports in May’17.

BRPL was the largest pellet exporter in Jun’17. The demand for Indian pellets in China sustained this month as well and an increase in spot pellet premium have continued to push its export for the month of Jun’17
