Essar Steel – an integrated steelmaker with steel making capacity of 10 MnT pa increased its iron ore sourcing by 12% Q-o-Q for Q1-FY18 over Q4-FY17. The company sourced 3.11 MnT iron ore in Q1-FY18 against 2.78 MnT iron ore in Q4-FY17.
The iron ore sourcing from the steelmaker was up by 20% Y-o-Y as well compared with Q1-FY17 with the quantity of 2.78 MnT then; however the sourcing was down by 12% M-o-M at 0.98 MnT against 1.10 MnT in May’17.
The steel maker has imported 0.11 MnT iron ore for Q1-FY18 which was down 64% Y-o-Y compared to Q1-FY17. No imports were done for the last quarter i.e. Q4-FY17.
Iron ore procurement from NMDC (C.G.) down by 5% Q-o-Q – Essar Steel procured 1.84 MnT iron ore from NMDC’s Bailadila mines in Chhattisgarh in Q1-FY18 against 1.94 MnT in Q4-FY17; however it was 14% Y-o-Y compared to Q1-FY17 which was 1.64 MnT then.
Sourcing from Odisha’s merchant mines up 38% Q-o-Q – Essar Steel sourced 1.16 MnT iron ore from Odisha’s merchant mines in Q1-FY18 compared to 0.84 MnT in Q4-FY17. Out of the total iron ore sourced from Odisha in Q1-FY18, largest share was of KJS Ahluwalia Mines (0.45 MnT) followed by Serajuddin Mines (0.39 MnT) and Indrani Patnaik mines at (0.15) MnT.

Essar Steel’s Pellet Exports Down Q-o-Q- Essar Steel exports were down 9% Q-o-Q, the company exported 0.34 MnT pellets in Q1-FY18 against 0.38 MnT in Q4-FY17. However it was up 7 fold Y-o-Y compared to Q1-FY17. The pellet export shipments observed were directed to China & Japan and sent from the port Paradip.
